Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) tirelessly works to help keep the Gullah/Geechee culture alive and to protect the environment. Her native culture is inextricably tied to the land and the waterways of the Sea Islands and the Atlantic Ocean. Due to major climate change dynamics, there are numerous threats to the Gullah/Geechee Nation’s coast and thereby to the continuation of the cultural traditions of Gullah/Geechees.
Queen Quet has been accredited to go to the Conference of Parties in November 2016. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) went into power in 1994, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. The Conference of the Parties (COP) was assigned as the preeminent administering body of the Convention. This year for the first time, the Gullah/Geechee Nation has an opportunity to have representation at this historic conference. Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) has been invited to attend this conference to not only represent her people, but to be able to contribute to the dialogue and share the various environmental endeavors that she is collaborating on with numerous partners. Please help her bring the voice of our people to this international arena.
The Gullah/Geechee Nation is faced with numerous climate change impacts including rapid erosion of the coast, sea level rise, and flooding. However, the Gullah/Geechee issues and those of many indigenous coastal communities have not been addressed in many of the national and international environmental and climate change and adaptation plans.
