2008 American Battlefield Protection Grants for our area

The American Battlefield Protection Program http://www.nps.gov/history/hps/abpp/grants/battlefieldgrants/2008grantawards.htm awarded 32 grants totaling $1,367,144 to assist in the preservation and protection of America’s historic battlefields in 24 states or territories. The funds will support a variety of projects at battle sites including: 

University of South Carolina Research Foundation (South Carolina) $48,445
Numerous Civil War fortifications constructed for the defense of the Charleston to Savannah Railroad in three counties in South Carolina were involved in two significant battles and many skirmishes during the war.  The forts will be documented through historical research and GPS data, for the preparation of GIS-generated maps, state site forms, and a historical context statement for a potential multiple property nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. gmc
