Heritage Library May 2016

  Open for Business!


Your Heritage Library will be open starting Monday, the 17th, and will be open on Hilton Head Island

  • Mondays
  • Tuesdays
  • Thursdays
  • Fridays

and in Beaufort at the Santa Elena Center

  • Tuesdays
  • Wednesdays
  • Fridays

Both locations will be open from 10:00am to 3:00 pm.


Our programs, classes, Ft. Mitchel tours, and Thursday afternoon bike tours will resume this week. Zion tours are suspended because of the damage brought by Hurricane Mathew.  Unfortunately, our Ghosts and Myths program is cancelled for this Halloween, and any reservations will be refunded.


Since we did not hold our first session of Starting Family Research last Wednesday, we will have both sessions this Wednesday, the 19th from 1:00 to 4:00.  If you are already signed up for this class, you will not need to register again.  If you haven’t signed up, now is your chance!


Here are the classes and programs for the rest of October:

History Programs

October 18 – Cemeteries of Hilton Head Island: Learn about the history and location of the 16 cemeteries on Hilton Head Island.

October 25 – Pirates of the Lowcountry: What were pirates doing the in the waters of the Lowcountry before the Revolutionary War?  Who were they?

Fee: $10 per person



Starting Family Research; A Two-Session Class for Beginners

Wednesday, October 19; 1:00pm to 4:00pm

Fee: $25 for Foundation members; $35 for non-members.

The Aftermath of Hurricane Matthew

From Coastal Discovery Museum/ Heritage Library: Island History Day is postponed. New date TBD.

From Coastal Discovery Museum: The Arkhaois Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Film Festival is postponed. New date TBD.

From George, HHI Chapter, ASSC: Hi Folks, Hurricane Mathew hit us hard! The last one of this scope was in the 1880s. As expected due the extensive recovery effort the October 15th meeting is cancelled. Our planned speaker Brent Burgin will be rescheduled. Best regards and stay safe, George

BCL Hours come October 1st, 2016

Below is a copy of the new hours at some locations of the Beaufort County Library. Please note that the Beaufort District Collection will be adding 2 hours on Friday afternoons. We will be open to the general public on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 9 am to 5 pm beginning October 1, 2016. Access to the research collection and staff will remain by advance appointment only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. County Offices Closed September 2-5, 2016

Due to the inclement weather forecasted, Beaufort County Administrator Gary Kubic has announced that all County government offices will be closed on Friday, September 2, 2016, and resume normal operating hours on Tuesday, September 6, 2016.

Employees working for elected and appointed officials, as well as all essential public safety employees, should follow the instructions of their management.

Tropical Storm Hermine is expected to impact our area Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening, lasting through the overnight hours into early Friday afternoon.

The County strongly encourages the public to prepare for severe weather and to monitor the storm on local news media and other information outlets including the following:
