Spartanburg County Public Libraries seeks a Processing Archivist to join its Local  History / Genealogy team.


POSTING DATE: January 20, 2016

JOB TITLE: Processing Archivist/Librarian I, Grade 23

LOCATION: Kennedy Room, Headquarters

DATE AVAILABLE: April 1, 2016

SALARY: $38,000 per year minimum

HOURS: FLSA exempt position, equivalent to non-exempt 40 hour position. 


•             MLS/MLIS from an accredited ALA library school, with concentration in Archives and Preservation, and a minimum of two years of archival work experience.

•             Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA) – Certification Preferred. 


•             Conducts appraisal, acquisitions, and accessioning of historical records.

•             Describes and processes archival materials from a variety of sources.

•             Creates finding aids, research guides, articles, statistics and reports.

•             Catalogs materials utilizing relevant standards for archival description.

•             Maintains departmental records, such as spreadsheets, inventories, and security files.

•             Provides specialized reference services in person, by telephone, by e-mail and mail.

•             Responds to questions about local history and genealogy from patrons and staff.

•             Maintains and preserves materials in a variety of formats, including grant-related project planning and implementation.

•             Initiates and fosters relationships with donors.

•             Promotes archival collections through community outreach.

•             Participates in developing digital collections as a member of SCPL’s Digital Collections working group.

•             Supervises volunteers and student interns at the project level.


•             Professional career knowledge of archives practices, policies, and standards.

•             Experience with collection appraisal, arrangement, acquisitions, etc.

•             Knowledge of / experience with using ArchivesSpace to manage collections.

•             Enthusiastic advocate for archives and special collections.

•             Public services orientation.

•             Demonstrated ability to work with members of a team.

•             Experienced in networking with colleagues at all levels.

•             Demonstrated knowledge of DACS, EAD and RDA.

•             Excellent oral and written communication skills.

•             Grant–writing experience preferred.
