Inaugural Exhibit “Santa Elena: America’s Untold Story”

now open to the public

Tuesday-Saturday 10am – 4pm  

Sunday 1pm – 4pm

Cost for exhibit admission is $10/adult, $5/child (age 5-12), free for children under 5 and active duty and first responders.

Join us for a variety of special programs and presentations 

In the Lecture Room of the Santa Elena History Center meet characters from our past, dive into the layers of the Santa Elena story, take in the scientific aspect of archaeology and much more!

The Forward Man: Pedro Menéndez de Avilés   

May 14, 2016 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am

Why and how did an impoverished boy from a small Spanish town become the master of a vast swath of the North American continent? Discover answers to these and other intriguing questions with Dr. James Tisdale.

The Heritage Trust Program: 42 Years of Preservation  

May 17, 2016 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Learn about the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Heritage Trust Program was created in 1974 as the first of its kind in the nation.

Undaunted Valor: The Beaufort Volunteer Artillery in the Civil War  

May 19, 2016 @ 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

This presentation focuses on its Civil War exploits in over a dozen military engagements.

Meet the Marsh Tacky: the Spanish-Heritage Horse of South Carolina

Carolina Marsh Tacky Association is coming to Beaufort for a lecture, book signing, and horse petting. This is an event you will not want to miss!

CAMP DIG IT!

Camp Dig-It is geared toward children ages 6-14 and offers an introduction to the field of archaeology by a professional archaeologist.

Surviving Castro’s Cuba: A refugee’s story                                                                             

May 24, 2016 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Juan Carlos, who arrived in the United States at the age of seven as part of the Pedro Pan program, recounts the nightmares of Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution wrought on his family and thousands of his fellow citizens.

Instructor: Juan Carlos Jiménez, PhD.

Colonial Medicine                                                                                                                    

May 25, 2016 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am

What was health care like for people in colonial South Carolina? You will learn how people in the past dealt with sickness and disease through a presentation and by examining reproduction artifacts.
