Hilton Head Island, SC – The Coastal Discovery Museum is pleased to present “William Hilton and the Formation of the Colony of South Carolina” on Saturday, April 9th at 2 PM.  Captain William Hilton sailed into Port Royal Sound in 1663, giving Hilton Head Island its name. Find out more about Captain Hilton’s English heritage and his father’s reasons for leaving England to come to the New World from historical researcher, journalist, and Editor-at-large & Associate Publisher of The Charleston Mercury Shay McNeal. She will explain the interconnectedness of South Carolina’s colonial families due to mercantile activities, land acquisitions, and intermarriage and how this affected the development of this region in the earliest days of Colonial America.

Currently, Shay McNeal is the Associate Publisher and Editor-at-Large for The Charleston Mercury and writer of the column “Meet You in the Middle,” where she writes about ISIS, Russia, other foreign affairs as well as domestic politics. After retiring from a career as a political and media consultant, McNeal began pursuing historical research and writing. In particular, she has served as a contributing writer for the Discovery Channel and has been a frequent guest on the BBC radio network regarding historical topics including colonial American history.

The charge for this program is $10 per person for non-Museum members and no charge for Coastal Discovery Museum members. Please call to register – 843-689-6767, ext. 223.
