Davis to illustrate a great ocean gateway

A dynamo of economic energy lies in an uninhabited seaside marsh between Savannah and Hilton Head Island.  State Sen. Tom Davis of Beaufort knows how to charge it up.

Davis will tell how and why on Jan. 25, as the first presenter in The Changemakers 2016 Speakers Series, benefiting the Heritage Library of Hilton Head Island and the Coastal Discovery Museum.

Davis has been an early and leading supporter of the Jasper Ocean Terminal project, which would create a convenient state-of-the-art port for major ocean freighters.  The port is planned for the South Carolina side of the Savannah River, more than a dozen miles closer to the ocean than current facilities.

With a vast ability to handle containers from anywhere in the world and quickly connect them to rail and truck transport throughout the United States, the Jasper terminal would complement the already-busy Savannah shipping complex and would boost South Carolina’s export economy.

Tickets for Davis’ presentation are $20 (or $30 for a couple) and can be purchased online at HeritageLib.org or CoastalDiscovery.org or by calling 843-686-6560.

The Jan. 25 event at the Coligny Theatre will begin with a 5:30 reception; Davis’ talk starts at 6 p.m.
