BDC Schedule Adjustment, June 4 – 10

The BDC Research Room will be closed to the public on Friday, June 5 and Monday, June 8 due to staff shortage. The BDC is unable to schedule research appointments on Thurs., June 4; Tuesday, June 9; or Wednesday, June 10 due to staff shortage. Contact or call 255-6468 by Wednesday, June 3 at 3 pm to schedule a BDC Room research appointment for Thursday, June 11.

 The Heritage Library will continue to offer our wonderful Tuesday morning history programs through June, and our Thursday morning tours of Ft. Mitchel through the summer.  Please join us for some educational and enlightening stories of our island’s history.  See the schedules below.

We will continue to offer our one free hour of service if you need special attention with your family history, and our genealogists will be on hand at the library through the summer.

She takes the listeners on a historical journey from May 1, 1865 when the first Decoration Day was led by 10,000 Gullah/Geechees who were joined by Union soldiers and northern missionaries in Charleston, SC to honor those that were fallen soldiers of the US Civil War to the current events in the Gullah/Geechee Nation that are living memorials to the legacy of Gullah/Geechees.

Put yourself into the island’s historic places

Come to the Heritage Library for a 90-minute talk about the history of Hilton Head Island accompanied by a map that you can then use for your own self-guided car or bike tour of the island’s historic sites.

The May 26 class, starting at 10:30 a.m., is just $5 per person. Because seating is limited, reservations are required. Call 843-686-6560.

The Heritage Library ( is a nonprofit history and ancestry research center with low-fee services open to the public at 852 William Hilton Parkway (second floor; parking and entrance in back).
