NEH Preservation Assistance Grants due May 5

The National Endowment for the Humanities has published the guidelines for Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions Program.

The grant application deadline is May 5, 2015.  Funded projects would begin January 2016.

The National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grants help small and mid-sized cultural heritage institutions such as libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, town and county records offices, and colleges and universities improve their ability to preserve and care for their humanities collections. Awards of up to $6000 support preservation related collection assessments, consultations, and institutional and collaborative disaster and emergency planning. Preservation Assistance Grants also support education and training in best practices for sustaining digital collections, standards for digital preservation, and the care and handling of collections during digitization. Institutions may request funds for a preservation assessment of digital collections. NEH does not fund digitization or the development of digital programs in this grant category.

Training and workshops that focus on the preservation of collections is also supported by Preservation Assistance Grants. In addition to workshops on traditional preservation, these grants will support education and training in digitization best practices as well as the management and preservation of digital resources. LYRASIS offers a complete set of courses related to the digitization of materials as well as digital preservation. Institutions could opt for a single class, a suite of classes or a course personalized for your institution. Additionally, LYRASIS can assist with preservation assessments of collections, providing identification, risk management, and general management advice related to born digital or collections of digitized resources as well as analog and hybrid collections.

Grant guidelines are available on the NEH Web site .  The grant application deadline is May 5, 2015.   If you would like to talk more about potential projects after reviewing the guidelines, call NEH at 202.606.8570 or email to discuss and receive helpful tips for a writing a successful application.
