Heritage Library Announces January History Programs

Location: Heritage Library – 852 William Hilton Parkway, 2nd Floor

Cost: $5 Donation Required

January 13 & 27th, 2015 – 10am – Historic Sites on Hilton Head Island:  Join us for a one-and one-half-hour talk about the history of Hilton Head Island and the historic sites on the island accompanied by a map that you can then use for your own self-guided tour of the sites by car or by bicycle.

Hilton Head Island has an extensive and varied history, and much of that history can still be seen and enjoyed at a variety of sites around the island. See the tabby remains of the Stoney-Baynard plantation house in Sea Pines, and the ramparts of Ft. Mitchel in Hilton Head Plantation.  Visit the Mitchelville kiosk in Fish Haul Park to learn about the first self-governed black community created during the Civil War, and the Gullah Museum on Gum Tree Road to learn of the Gullah community that continues to flourish on the island.

January 20, 2015 – 10am – The Story of Santa Elena: Santa Elena was the first permanent settlement in the new world, settled by the Spanish in 1566.  This program is an introduction to the history of Santa Elena and will include information about the Santa Elena Foundation and its plans.  Presented by Terry Herron, Joe Lee, and Chris Allen.

January 21, 2015 – 6pm – The Story of Santa Elena: Repeat, please note – special time!
