Heritage Library Salutes Its Volunteers

The Heritage Library recognized three of its outstanding volunteers at a luncheon on Wednesday, May 21, 2014.  Dee Phillips was recognized as Volunteer of the Year and Pre Moore received the President’s Award for her service on the People of Mitchelville Project.

Dee is a volunteer in the History Department.  She helped develop and helps present our Historic Sites talks, gives tours of Ft. Mitchel, and recently helped research and develop a talk on the important women in the history of the island.  Dee is also the head of our curriculum committee, responsible for the development of a curriculum on the history of Mitchelville.

Pre has been with the library since 2004, and started as our bookkeeper.  She moved from that position into the library, and has been our principal microfilm transcriber.  She most recently worked on the transcription of most of the microfilm records from the Civil War that had anything to do with Mitchelville, and managed the work of the other volunteers working on that project.

Robert Smith was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award. (Picture attached).  He has been a part of the library since 2000, and served on the Board of Directors from 2001 to 2012, and as President from 2009 to 2011.  Bob worked in the library as a Librarian for many years during that time, and has been the principal Civil War researcher.  He served on the Board of the Mitchelville Preservation Project representing the Heritage Library, and created a two-volume binder on researching African-American genealogy that is still a part of our collection today.

The Heritage Library would like to recognize the value of all of our volunteers.  We could not exist without them.
