Oral History Workshop to Spotlight Latino Immigration

From Kerry Taylor, Lowcountry Oral History Alliance at The Citadel:

The Lowcountry Oral History Alliance invites the public to participate in an oral history workshop on Saturday, May 24 from 10am-3pm at The Citadel (Bond Hall 166). The interactive workshop is aimed at interviewers of all levels of experience. It will also highlight materials gathered for The Citadel Oral History Program’s Las Voces project, which seeks to document the emerging Latino communities of the Lowcountry.

Workshop leaders Marina Lopez (Medical University of South Carolina), Mary Jo Fairchild (South Carolina Historical Society) and Kerry Taylor (Citadel Oral History Program) will cover each aspect of the oral history process, including project planning, interviewing, technology, and archiving. The program will be of value to those involved in family or community projects that are well underway and those in the planning stages. Teachers, community activists, genealogists, and high school and college students are encouraged to attend.

The workshop is part of the Alliance’s ongoing efforts to promote best practices in oral history. Alliance-affiliated oral historians have offered ten community workshops in South and North Carolina over the past five years. A $10 registration fee includes lunch. Spanish language translation will be available.

Please pre-register to reserve your place by calling 843-953-4857 or sending an email to kerry.taylor@citadel.edu.

The workshop and Las Voces project are made possible through support from the Humanities Council SC.

Hope you can make it, Kerry
