“Bold Banners:  Early Civil War Flags of South Carolina”

Description:  Allen Roberson, Director of the SC Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum will present “Bold Banners: Early Civil War Flags of South Carolina” on Thursday, February 20th at 3 PM.  The presentation is based upon an exhibition that the Museum displayed in 2011-12.  “Bold Banners” received an Award of Achievement from the South Carolina Federation of Museums for the exhibit and the flag conservation efforts done in partnership with the SC Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Roberson will discuss the Museum’s recent Civil War flag conservation projects, several specific flags from the collection and exhibitions

Speaker:         W. Allen Roberson, Director of the SC Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum (Columbia, SC)

Speaker Info: Born and raised in Belton, South Carolina, Roberson attended Clemson University, but graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BA in English and History.  After receiving a graduate certificate in museum administration from the University of South Carolina, Roberson began his career at the McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina and worked for the Department of Archives and History. Later, he spent time in Beaufort County as the Registrar and later Collections Curator at the US Marine Corps Museum at Parris Island.  Hired as the Director of the SC Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum in 1998, he was responsible for the relocation, restructuring and revitalization of the Museum.  Milestones of SC Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum since that time include increasing attendance by visitors and school groups, presenting popular exhibitions regarding South Carolina military history and acquiring important artifacts and archival materials for the Museum’s collections.  During his tenure, the SC Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum has been recognized with awards of achievement by the South Carolina Federation of Museums and the American Association of State and Local History and achieved accreditation by the American Association of Museums.
