RE: Nov. 19th– 1 pm ASSC/HH Chapter Meeting

Kara Bridgman Sweeney

Hilton Head, SC:  The Archaeological Society of South Carolina, Hilton Head Chapter is meeting on Hilton Head Island, Nov. 19th at 1 pm at Coastal Discovery Museum at Historic Honey Horn. The will be a brief business meeting for the election of officers.

Kara Bridgman Sweeney is our speaker for Nov.  Bridgman Sweeney will discuss her dissertation “A Complex Web of History and Artifact Types in the Early Archaic Southeast.” The ASSC  funded some of this work with a Grant-in-Aid in 2004, and she presented some of her preliminary findings at the ASSC conference in 2006.  Her project involved analyzing over 2,000 side-notched artifacts, in order to document the variation in artifact types throughout the Coastal Plain Southeast.

Dr. Kara Bridgman Sweeney (Ph.D., Anthropology, University of Florida; M.A., Archaeology, University College Cork, Ireland) has over 15 years of experience in the field of archaeology, with an emphasis on lithic analysis, historical interpretation, and public archaeology and outreach. Along with lithic analysis, Dr. Bridgman Sweeney’s specialties include ethnoarchaeology and technical writing.

Dr. Bridgman Sweeney’s Ph.D. studies involved the examination of Early Archaic social boundaries and processes at differing scales, as documented in her dissertation “A Complex Web of History and Artifact Types in the Early Archaic Southeast.” Recent projects include data recovery investigations at a Late Archaic/Early Woodland site near Fish Dam Ford on the Broad River in South Carolina, and various cultural resources investigations throughout Honshu and Okinawa, Japan. Dr. Bridgman Sweeney works for Brockington and Associates out of their Savannah, Georgia office.

We had several meetings in the Beaufort area during Archaeology Month including our  4th Annual What the HECK is IT? Artifact Identification Program- 1st time North of the Broad. Drs. Jon Leader and Ron Anthony identified a number of artifacts.

The Inaugural Arkhaios Cultural and Archaeology Film Festival was held at the Coligny Plaza was a smashing success. Meetings are being held to determine dates for 2014.
