ASSC Hilton Head chapter – presents Weds. Aug. 14th Jean Guilleux “Gifts from the Sea” Artifact Collection

The Archaeology Society of SC/Hilton Head Chapter presents Jean Guilleux, local ASSC/HH member, who will discuss his ongoing research presented at the Archaeological Society of South Carolina 2013 annual conference.

Tide after tide, pottery sherds have been washing up the beach on Hilton Head Island during 2012 and 2013. The area collected and reported on is located on the Port Royal Sound side, between Beach Markers 127 and 132.

In addition to about 550 pottery sherds, numerous bones, fossils, glass sherds, some lithics and abraders, and other artifacts, notably some fossilized resin and a modified fossilized bone, have also washed up. Clay rolls wash up this beach as well, and clay deposits are uncovered at times of deep beach erosion.

Analysis of the pottery sherds, and research on the evolution of the beach and of the Port Royal Sound is presented in an attempt to pinpoint the origin of the sherds. Artifacts recovered will be on display.

The meeting is Wednesday, August 14th at Discovery House, Coastal Discovery Museum on Honey Horn Plantation at 2:30 pm.

All ASS\C/HH meetings are free and open to the public.
