Gullah Geechee Opportunities
July 14 & 15, Frank and I joined Queen Quet, and Ricky Wright, Vice President of the Gullah Geechee Fishing Association, on Capitol Hill to educate members of congress about the Gullah Geechee fishing traditions that may be jeopardized as a result of upcoming legislation.
The enthusiasm with which Members of Congress such as Congressman Alcee Hastings, who was recently honored by the National Parks Conservation Association for his support of the national parks, Congressman James Clyburn, Congressman John Lewis and Congresswoman Corrine Brown and their staff react to the Gullah Geechee people is like watching magic happen. The love and admiration for this culture that has survived and thrived for almost 400 years on American soil is just palpable.
Mid-July, Queen Quet and I flew to Chicago where, along with our colleague Sharon Fuller, PhD student at the University of California, Berkeley, we spoke on a panel addressing racial diversity as a key to sustainability in America’s coastal zones. The panel was developed by FAMU PH.D student Arianna Marshall.
