HBF: “Great Santini” and a Great Birthday Party

Join Historic Beaufort Foundation in kicking off a weekend of activities celebrating the release of Pat Conroy’s new book by taking in a 30th anniversary screening of The Great Santini, Thursday night, August 27, around 8 pm near the Pavilion in the Waterfront Park.  Based on an earlier Conroy novel, the movie features actor Michael O’Keefe in an Academy Award nominated role and actors Robert Duval and Blythe Danner. [Personal note:  Robert Duval is my favorite actor!–gmc]

  • Entrance to the movie in the park is free.
  • Bring a chair and bug spray

Michael O’Keefe, who received an Academy nomination for his portrayal of Ben Meecham, will be a guest in a celebration of John Mark Verdier’s 250th birthday, Saturday, August 29th at the Verdier House. Bring your copies of the Great Santini book and/or the DVD for him to sign. The Verdier House will be open for tours, refreshments and the book signing, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

[Yes, this is at the same time Conroy is signing copies of South of Broad, at Bay Street Trading Co. across Bay Street. Please note:  No books will be available for sale at the Verdier House.   You’ve got to bring your own!]  

  • Saturday’s tour of the Verdier House with refreshments and book signing is $20 donation per person.
  • A $50 donation includes the tour, refreshments, book signing and the coffee table book, Beaufort, a regular $50 value.

HBF volunteers will sell popcorn and soft drinks with proceeds supporting a state matching grant for replacement of the Verdier House roof. Proceeds from Saturday’s birthday party at the Verdier House will also go to the matching grant.

On the Record is available

The September issue of “On The Record” is available.    Summarizing the contents: The SCDAH has a new director,  Archives Month 2009 plans are underway, and budget cuts at the state level are seriously impacting the services of the State Archives  and Records Management departments.

BCHS Announces Fall Schedule of Events

Oct. 8th       BCHS presents Emory Campbell discussing the “Gullah Geechee Corridor and Growing up on  Hilton Head” at the Fellowship Hall in the First Presbyterian Church at noon on the corner of Church and North Streets.
Nov. 12th     Robert B. Cuthbert and  Stephen G. Hoffius recently edited a collection of Lowcountry Plantation sketches by Choltilde R. Martin for an exciting new book, Northern Money-Southern Land. Mr. Hoffius will speak about the book at noon at the Fellowship Hall in the First Presbyterian Church at the corner of Church and North Streets.  Choltilde Martin was a member of the original BCHS Board of Directors in 1939.

New Board at BCHS

Pamela Martin Ovens, President of the Beaufort County Historical Society is pleased to announce the new Board members and the Advisory Board Members.
Serving for a 2 year term will be Ovens of Hilton Head as President: Mary Lou Brewton, Vice President; Harry Chakides, Treasurer; Nancy Gilley, Recording Secretary; Linda Hoffman, Corresponding Secretary.  Past President, Iva Roberts Welton, remains on the Board.
Board members include: W. Thomas Logan of Beaufort: Fran Heyward Marscher of Hilton Head: Mae Mendoza of Beaufort; and Michael Taylor of Hilton Head. Iva Welton (Hilton Head) and  Bubba Von Harten (Beaufort) remain on the Board but in new roles.
Dorothy Gnann, Beaufort; Ian Hill, Beaufort; Larry Rowland, PH.D., St Helena Island; Stephen Wise, Ph.D., Beaufort; Julie Zachowski, Beaufort make up the group’s Advisory Board.
The members of the 2009-2011 Board will remain true to the 70 year old mission as stated in our constitution: The purpose of this society shall be for the collection and dissemination of accurate historical data with particluar emphasis on those of Beaufort County, the proper marking and preserving of its historic sites and the the study of history in general.

American Heritage Preservation Grants

boaBank of America is partnering with the Institute of Museum and Library Services to provide grants to small museums, libraries, and archives. The American Heritage Preservation grants will raise awareness and fund preservation of treasures held in small museums, libraries and archives.

Grants will help to preserve specific items, including works of art, artifacts and historical documents that are in need of conservation. Applicants will build on completed conservation assessments of their collections to ensure that the grants are used in accordance with best practices in the field, and underscore the importance of assessment planning.

Deadline for submission is September 15.
