Museums Disaster Recovery Workshop in Charleston 11/05

October 7, 2008
The South Carolina Federation of Museums is pleased to announce the forthcoming workshop Disaster Recovery for Museum Collections. Contracted through The Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET), this workshop will address how to respond to disasters that may strike museums or historic houses causing the disruption of services and possibly damaging museum collections. Is your institution prepared to handle both minor incidents and large-scale emergencies? Fire, smoke, flooding and other disasters can damage collections. Museum staff must be prepared to execute a salvage and response operation. Workshop participants will learn through lecture, discussion and hands-on team exercises how to prevent unnecessary loss of museum material by focusing on recovery techniques for paintings, furniture, textiles and objects.
Featured Speaker: Sharon Bennett

The workshop will be lead by Sharon Bennett, a veteran of Hurricane Hugo who has taught and participated in numerous disaster preparedness workshops throughout the Southeast including the NEH sponsored workshop”Safeguarding Our Cultural Heritage in Emergency Response.” Sharon is also a member of the Charleston County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
