SoCar wants your support to digitize SC newspapers, 1836 – 1922

September 24, 2008

South Caroliniana Library wants to digitize SC newspapers, 1836 – 1922.  Here’s how you can help Kate Boyd, the Digital Collections Librarian:

I am seeking letters of support for the South Caroliniana Library’s application for a National Endowment for the Humanities grant.  The NEH’s National Digital Newspaper Program is a funding program that will create, at the Library of Congress, a national, online digital resource of historically significant newspapers in each state.  The database will be created by scanning microfilm of selected newspapers published between 1836 and 1922.  The South Caroliniana Library is working with the University Libraries’ Digital Collections Librarian to apply for the current phase, which focuses on the time period 1860 to 1922.  We will be identifying South Carolina newspapers that meet the grant guidelines, and outsourcing the scanning of the microfilm.

If you are interested in providing a letter of support, please send it to Kate Boyd at the Thomas Cooper Library or via email at boydkf@mailbox.sc.edu by October 31.

SC Archives Month, October 2008

September 18, 2008

October 2008 is American Archives Month! Libraries, museums and archives across the country are planning special exhibits and events to highlight the importance of historical collections…and South Carolina is no exception!

The goal of South Carolina museums, libraries, archives and other institutions during Archives Month is to highlight the “gems” of their document and historical collections and reach out to their patrons and communities. To find out more about Archives Month 2008 special events and exhibits, please visit http://scarchivesmonth.palmettohistory.org/ and plan a visit to your local museum, archives, or library.

Support for Archives Month 2008 is provided to South Carolina institutions and organizations by the South Carolina State Historical Records Advisory Board (SC SHRAB). To learn more about Archives Month and SC SHRAB, please visit http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/shrab/shrab1.htm.

SHRAB Re-grant applications due December 5th

September 4, 2008

Read the announcement and requirements at: http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/shrab/snap/regrantannouncement.htm.  As a past and current recipient of SC SHRAB re-grant monies, I can attest to the program.  It is helping us prepare the Lucille Hasell Culp Collection for use by allowing us to hire an image archivist who is hard at work.  It’s a good grant program, the paperwork is not onerous, and the folks at the SC Archives are very helpful.  If you have a project that fits the SC SHRAB criteria, go for it.  The worst they can say is “No.” — gmc
