The shelling of Ft. Pulaski by the rifled cannon of Ft. Screven in April 1862 forced the Confederate garrison to abandon Ft. Pulaski and signaled the end of brick and mortar fortifications as a military fortress world wide. Ft Screven was built after the Civil War. Ft Pulaski was shelled by batteries put in place by the Union Army on Tybee Island. We will meet at 11:00 AM in the Tybee Island Light House visitor parking lot or at 9:30 in the Coastal Discovery Museum (on US 278) parking lot for the field trip to Tybee Island.
