The Hilton Head Chapter of the Archaeological Society of South Carolina, Inc. is continuing their winter speaker series with a wonderful presentation on the Yemassee by Dr. Eric Poplin.
Dr. Poplin’s lecture will be at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn on Tuesday, Feb. 17th at 7:00pm. The local meetings are free and open to the public.
Dr. Poplin completed his undergraduate degree in Anthropology at Catawba College, NC in 1977 and earned his PhD from the University of Calgary in 1986. He has worked in cultural resource management throughout the southeast and the Bahamas. He has also participated in projects over the years in Alberta, British Columbia and Ecuador. Eric is past president of the Council of SC Professional Archaeologists (COSCAPA) and is the Newsletter Editor for the ASSC. He is Vice President of Brockington, Inc., a CRM archaeological firm with offices in Mt. Pleasant, SC and Atlanta, GA.
On Saturday, February 28, 2009 the ASSC/HHI Branch Field Trip will be to the Tybee Island Lighthouse and Fort Screven, guided by Cullen Chambers, Executive Director, Tybee Island Historical Society. The shelling of Ft. Pulaski by the rifled cannon of Ft. Screven in April 1862 forced the Confederate garrison to abandon Ft. Pulaski and signaled the end of brick and mortar fortifications as a military fortress world wide. Ft Screven was built after the Civil War. Ft Pulaski was shelled by batteries put in place by the Union Army on Tybee Island. We will meet at 11:00 AM in the Tybee Island Light House visitor parking lot or at 9:30 in the Coastal Discovery Museum (on US 278) parking lot for the field trip to Tybee Island.
